Overview of China’s Futures Market in January 2014

  According to latest statistics from the China Futures Association (CFA), the volume of China’s futures market in January slipped on a monthly basis. Based on calculation on one side of the transactions, the volume and the turnover of China’s futures market in January were 155,027,824 contracts and RMB18,326,426 million, down by 1.10% and 11.44% year-on-year and down by 7.15% and 14.29% month-on-month, respectively.
  The Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) traded 54,200,724 contracts in January with the turnover of RMB4,763,394 million, accounting for 34.96% and 25.99% respectively of the national market, a year-on-year growth of 53.16% and 61.77% and month-on-month decrease of 5.34% and 5.30% respectively. By the end of January, the SHFE’s open interest totaling 1,814,109 contracts had slipped by 13.36% compared with that at the end of last month.
  The Zhengzhou Commodity Exchange (ZCE) traded 41,244,278 contracts in January with the turnover of RMB1,440,993 million, accounting for 26.60% and 7.86% respectively of the national market, a year-on-year decrease of 28.57% and 32.88% and month-on-month increase of 4.32% and decrease of 17.69% respectively. By the end of January, the ZCE’s open interest totaling 1,974,178 contracts had slipped by 1.23% compared with that at the end of last month.
  The Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) traded 45,636,072 contracts in January with the turnover of RMB2,764,729 million, accounting for 29.44% and 15.09% respectively of the national market, a year-on-year decrease of 6.07% and 29.48% and month-on-month decrease of 16.20% and 17.50% respectively. By the end of January, the DCE’s open interest totaling 3,277,178 contracts had risen by 3.91% compared with that at the end of last month.
  The China Financial Futures Exchange (CFFEX) traded 13,946,750 contracts in January with the turnover of RMB9,357,310 million, accounting for 9.00% and 51.06% respectively of the national market, a year-on-year decrease of 7.28% and 19.90% and month-on-month decrease of 11.19% and 16.82% respectively. By the end of January, the CFFEX’s open interest totaling 120,556 contracts had declined by 2.12% compared with that at the end of last month.
